What Should I Look for When Choosing a Propagation Tray?

Cell Count

Propagation trays come in various cell counts, from 24 to 72 per tray. Large growing operations may prefer trays with a high cell count, while small hobbyists may find trays with fewer cells easier to manage.

Cell Size

Propagation cells range in size from 0.5 inches to 5 inches. Larger cells are typically used for larger plants, such as trees and shrubs, while smaller cells may be better suited for starting seeds or propagating delicate plants.

Material

Liner trays for propagation are made from various materials, including plastic, metal, and fabric. Plastic trays are the most popular option and are available in multiple colors. Metal trays may be more durable but can be more expensive.

Fabric trays are often used for soil-less mixes and offer excellent drainage but can be more difficult to clean.

Drainage

All propagation trays should have some form of drainage, whether built-in or provided by holes in the bottom of the tray. Good drainage is essential for preventing waterlogged roots, which can lead to disease and death.
